To start with, the underclassmen were provided with two large, concrete balls. At ~700 lbs., they were enough to make the most manly of men feel a little inadequate.
Inside one of these concrete balls was hidden a secret number -- needed for some other part of the stack. How to get the number out? There was, conveniently, a pair of 6' tall ramps, directly facing one another. Clearly, a kinetic solution was in order.
They were provided with a tarp scavenged from a large trampoline, some rope, and a rough description of how to get the balls up the ramps. It took a lot of discussion for the team to work out all of the kinks, not to mention a few aborted attempts. If you can get a large team like that to work on some collaborative engineering plus some brute-force exertion to boot, you've got winning stack material.
Once they got it all figured out, it went pretty quick, and they got both balls up on the ramps -- after a few more grunts, of course.
After a quick countdown, the balls are released...
Revealing the sought-after number, 57.

This puzzle was indeed an extremely awesome one.
I should be getting the pictures from the shenanigans in my office shortly.
Oh yeah, could you also post a picture from the duct-taping?
