First of all, there's a great talk from Randall Munroe (of XKCD fame) up on YouTube from his recent talk for Authors@Google. It's better if you're familiar with the comics, as well as any flavors of geek you might be able to bring to the table, but it was great fodder to listen to (and occasionally watch) while working.
At about 21 minutes in, some old guy stands up to ask a question. "Have I seen a picture of this guy somewhere before, I wonder?" Before answering, Randall says, "Oh god. Donald Knuth? Well, it's really an honor to meet you, first of all." Seriously, Donald Motherfucking Knuth! (that's his little-known middle name)
Something interesting he pointed out was Project Euler, a small community site where cute, simple programming problems are posted, each of which should be able to be implemented very quickly. I've glanced at a few of the problems so far, and they make great fodder if there's a language you've been meaning to learn (*cough*python*cough*).
The title of the post comes from a bug in my solution to problem 17, "How many letters would be needed to write all the numbers in words from 1 to 1000?"
